The electrician position is located with the George E. Whalen Salt Lake City Healthcare System, Salt Lake City, Utah Engineering Service. As a journeyman electrician, the incumbent performs a combination of design, installation, testing, uses, repair, and/or maintenance of electrical equipment, components, instruments, and/or systems.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Duties include but are not limited too: Maintain, repair, and install electrical and electronic systems and equipment. Utilizes all instruments correctly and equipment normally used by journeyman electricians. Uses appropriate test equipment to prevent overloading. Utilizes protection gear and general personal protective equipment (PPE) for work on electrical systems. Pull conductors through raceway systems, phase out and make connections. Conducts annual tension/polarity tests on all electronic receptacles in patient care areas. Provides routing for conduits and wiring for electrical boxes, panels and equipment. Traces hard-to-locate defects or problems associated with the completion of repairs and installations. Perform preventive maintenance and testing of complex electrical systems, circuits, equipment, appliances, controls, components, lighting fixtures, emergency electrical systems and back-up electrical systems. Install, modify, repair, troubleshoot, test and check for proper voltage capacity, loading of wires and equipment, and balancing of loads. Performs preventative maintenance and troubleshoots high voltage (4,160v) primary systems. Select proper gauges, insulation, protection devices and switching for a variety of equipment. Balances service loads over three phases. Installs, modifies, repairs, troubleshoots, and tests new and existing substations. Troubleshoots complex electrical systems, circuits, equipment, appliances, controls, components, lighting fixtures, emergency electrical systems and back-up electrical systems. Troubleshoots/repairs, inspects and operates all emergency generators and elevators on station. Reads blueprints, plans, prices and prepares orders for materials needed for assignments. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; Various tours available Position Description Title/PD#: Electrician/PD14014A Physical Requirements: The incumbent makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other hard-to-reach places. This requires electrical workers to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Electrical workers frequently lift and carry tools, equipment, and parts that weigh up to 9 kilograms (20 pounds) and, less often, up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds). Occasionally, they lift or move with assistance moderately heavy objects weighing more than 18 kilograms. Working Conditions: The work is performed both inside and outside. Electrical workers are sometimes required to make repairs and installations in bad weather; in work areas that are noisy, dirty, dusty, and greasy; on scaffolding or cranes at heights of 9 meters (30 feet) or more; and in close quarters such as manholes, attics, or aboard ships. They are occasionally exposed to the possibility of injury from falling, electrical shock, burns, and rotary devices such as electrical motors. They are frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises. Electricians are exposed to a variety of weather conditions, both in winter and summer, in making repairs and installations on exterior work sites. During emergency repairs, extremes of bad weather are sometimes present. Many work sites are hot, dirty, dusty, greasy, poorly lit, cramped and with unpleasant odors. The incumbent may be required to work in the vicinity of asbestos containing materials; as such, the incumbent will be required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary to accomplish assigned tasks in a safe manner.
