This position is located with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, District 3-Hopi Detention in Keams Canyon, Arizona.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: GL-08: To qualify at the GL-08 level, you must have one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade or equivalent providing direct supervision and care to criminal offenders and providing guidance to lower level correctional officers in the operation of a correctional and/or detention facility; enforcing rules and regulations governing facility security, inmate accountability and inmate conduct; and exercising sound judgment in making instantaneous decisions affecting life, well-being, civil liberties and property. Experience may have been gained in work such as serving as a lead as a police officer, mental health counselor in a residential facility; or detention officer. All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Merit Promotion candidates must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the announcement closing date. Preference in filling vacancies is given to qualified Indian candidates in accordance with the Indian Preference Act of 1934 (title 25, USC Section 472). Additional selections may be made from this announcement if identical vacancies occur in the same location within 90 days from the closing date.
Lead three or more correctional officers in a team approach to accomplish operational tasks related to correction/detention policy procedures. Operate the overall facility in accordance to policy and procedures. Supervise inmate movement and maintains discipline within the facility, on the grounds, and during recreational activities. Provide inmate supervision during transports to courts, medical appointments and to other facilities and coordinates and supervises inmate services, activities and programs. Supervise or conduct searches and seizes contraband within the facility, in cells, on inmates and prevents the introduction of contraband into the facilities. Maintain the security of the facility as well as the custody, safety and humane treatment of inmates. Receive newly committed offenders and evaluates behavioral adjustments to confinement. Conduct intake and classification new inmates. Provide humane and ethical treatment of inmates at all times.
