This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for certain competitive positions to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: Assigned as a Striker, Diesel, aboard a self-propelled vessel under an established training program for Diesel Engineers. Operate water treatment equipment to produce potable water for drinking, cooking, laundering and sanitation needs.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Striker Diesel without more than normal supervision which includes: assisting in the maintenance of engines and auxiliary equipment, operating equipment controls, reading and checking gauges; and interpreting technical manuals or specifications. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. You will be rated on the following Job Elements as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: Physical Effort: Considerable physical and mental concentration is required during both machinery operation and lubrication. The work requires continuous standing on the metal decks of the engine rooms and frequent bending and stooping. Work may require moderately heavy lifting and physical effort in moving 120 pounds drums of grease and 55 gallon drums of oil using daily. Working Conditions: Works inside and outside in weather that is occasionally disagreeable. Dirt and grease are frequently disagreeable caused by working on equipment in marine hulls. Noise is frequently and intensely disagreeable, caused by working in and around engines, generators, gears and large electric motors located in holds of floating plant. Fumes and smoke are frequently unpleasant and the wearing of a helmet is occasionally unpleasant. Incumbent is constantly exposed to the possibility of electrocution, cuts, bruises, strains, sprains, crankcase explosions, and drowning. Incumbent is required to observe safety precaution and work in a safe manner to prevent injury to self and others and to prevent property damage. *All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. * This announcement may be used to fill like vacancies for six months after the closing date.
Stands a regular watch and assists the shift operator in the care and operation of engine room equipment by making frequent check of temperature and pressure gauges for proper reading.
Greases equipment, using pressure guns, selecting the proper lubricant for the different locations.
Maintains engine room in a clean and orderly condition.
Stands by control panel during peak load conditions to keep generators in balance so that operations will not be delayed by one generator becoming overloaded and circuit breaker kicking out.
Performs preventive maintenance work represented by changing fuel oil filters, replacing pumps, changing oil, assembly and disassembly work in assisting superior on major repair jobs.
