The incumbent serves as a Lead Police Officer (Sergeant) ensuring a safe and secure environment across all VA Administrations and properties within various settings, including a variety of jurisdictional environments, such as VHA Medical Centers and facilities, Inpatient Clinics, Outpatient Clinics, domiciliary and administrative sites throughout the United States.

GS-08 grade level: For this Lead Police Officer (Sergeant K9), GS-8 position, I have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 grade level in the Federal service (or equivalent pay band), that provided a knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Specialized experience includes: Leading and/or providing guidance to employees in their duties in response to potential threats, detecting criminal activity, fire and other emergencies; enforcing federal, state, and local laws; making arrests; conducting foot and vehicle patrol; maintaining control of a scene or incident; taking statements from witnesses/suspects and advising them of their rights; preparing detailed reports of criminal offenses, violations, incidents, and citations issued; interrogating suspects; and applying all correct rules of search and seizure. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills. Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hour worked per week. Experience as a security guard or corrections officer is generally not qualifying. NOTE: You must provide detailed information of your experience performed. Information such as "I was a Patrolman", "I was a Police Officer for a number of years," or "I enforced Federal, State, county, and laws" is insufficient to determine your qualifications. Driver's License Requirement: Applicants must possess a valid, unrestricted State driver's license, have a safe driving record, and demonstrate that he or she is medically qualified to operate the appropriate motor vehicle safely. Applicants are required to pass agency Government Vehicle Drivers physical examination. Firearm Requirement: VA Police Officers are required to carry agency-approved firearms while on duty on VA property. Officers must achieve and maintain qualification/certification with the agency-approved firearms as condition of gaining and continuing employment as a Police Officer. Applicants must be able to possess firearms under the terms of the Gun Control Act of 1968, as amended (18 U.S.C. 922(g)(9). POLICE OFFICER CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: New VA Police Officers are required to attend a 7 week course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. Satisfactory completion of this course is a condition of continued employment. A medical examination is required. The duties of these positions require moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature. The following medical requirements apply to all applicants: good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice. Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking, driving, bending, stooping, reaching, crawling, and similar activities. Employees engage in such exertions when responding to alarms, pursuing suspects, or participating in weapons or other kinds of training activities, climbing stairs in office buildings, or walking foot patrols in and around large buildings. In some positions, the work may regularly involve lifting and carrying of heavy objects of kilograms (50 pounds) or less, such as weapons. Some positions may require common physical characteristics and abilities in agility and dexterity and the strength to pursue, apprehend, and detain uncooperative suspects. WORK CONDITIONS: The work involves both moderate and high risks and possible endangerment of life or serious injury that requires the exercise of safety precautions and use of personal protective equipment The work is performed in settings in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate to severe discomforts and unpleasantness, such as high temperatures in confined spaces, high temperatures due to mandatory protective personal equipment, or adverse weather conditions during extended periods of traffic and patrol duties. The work involves moderate risk requiring exercise of safety precautions when working around hazardous materials such as toxic gases, explosives, infectious biological materials, and others that pose a moderate risk of exposure. Directs day-to-day lead policing operations and non-lead policing assignments. Works in collaboration with the Police Supervisor carrying out PS's overall mission where most of the work is performed on Departmental property. This includes any properties owned, leased, or licensed when consistent with Federal law, regulation, VA policy and operational guidance. Assigns, distributes, reviews, approves, and disapproves employees' assignments. Monitors and reviews the status and progress of the work and makes workload adjustments to ensure the workload is balanced. Refers to supervisor questions or matters not covered by standards and problems in meeting performance standards. Consults with the immediate supervisor for assistance on problems, such as backlogs to ensure work is completed timely, effectively, and efficiently. Ensures work assignments are distributed and performed promptly by employees. Reviews police reports, patrol reports and ongoing investigations to ensure complete, concise, and factual-information reporting. Makes available written instructions, reference materials and supplies. Reviews and recommends standard operating procedures or changes to current standard operating procedures. Provides on the job training and acts as a field training officer to new employees. Answers questions of other employees on procedures, policies, directives, etc. Obtains needed information or decisions from supervisor on problems that come up. Checks on work in progress and reviews completed work to ensure that the supervisor's instruction and deadlines have been met. Amends or rejects work not meeting established standards. Approves leave for a few hours or for emergencies. Provides input on performance rating and any disciplinary action (to include removal) of PS employees. Informs employees of available services and employee activities. Resolves simple, informal complaints of employees and refers others to the supervisor. Supports the goals of equal employment opportunity. Participates in the selection of staff as requested by the supervisor; provides or coordinates staff training, either during shift briefing or designated training days. Leads law enforcement assignments to preserve peace; to prevent, detect and investigate crimes, to arrest or apprehend violators; and to assist citizens in emergencies, including the protection of civil rights.
