Job Description:
This position is a Forestry Technician, GS- 0462-7 working in Wells Maine for the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge. This is a temporary position expected to last Not to Exceed (NTE) 1039 Hours.
Only experience and education obtained by 08/08/2025 will be considered. In order to qualify for this position you must possess the Minimum Qualification. Minimum Qualification [GS-7] A. I have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 grade level in the Federal service that equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience may include: 1) Planning and carrying out forest inventories for the purpose of estimating tree density, species, composition, regeneration, timber volumes, timber types, etc.; 2) Selectively marking timber for sale in accordance with approved silvicultural techniques and determining the volumes of trees to be sold; 3) Inspecting timber harvest operations to ensure compliance with provisions of Special Use Permits; 4) Assisting in conducting pest surveys and carrying out approved control measures; 5) Assisting in conducting systematic forest resource surveys and inventories to collect field data used in preparation of both long and short range management prescriptions. NOTE: Within the first 2 pages of your resume, it must contain sufficient detail of this level of work, i.e., complete begin/end dates, hours worked per week, duties performed, etc. for each timeframe for consideration. OR B. I have completed at least 1 year (18 semester hours) of graduate level education directly related to this position. NOTE: Transcripts required. OR C. I have a combination of successfully completed graduate level education, and specialized experience (both as described above) that, when computed as percentages of their respective requirements, equals at least 100% when combined. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
This is a temporary appointment intended for seasonal work that is less than 6 months or 1040 hours from the date of appointment/service year. It is expected this position will be terminated upon completion of the seasons work. The agency may non-competitively rehire an eligible temporary seasonal worker in subsequent years who works less than 6 months or 1040 hours in their service year. As a Forestry Technician your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following: Plans forestry habitat management projects with refuge staff and partners to assure compliance with permitting, agreements, laws and best management practices. Uses Global Positioning Systems in the field to navigate, record and mark locations. Collects field data using computerized systems related to forestry applications. Transfers field data from field units to a computer for analysis and mapping using tools such as Arc GIS Pro, Arc GIS Online, Fieldmaps and Survey 1,2,3. Uses software such as excel, Microsoft word and databases to enter, maintain, retrieve and summarize field data.
