Job Description:

This position is for the Construction, Maintenance & Operations section of Facilities Management Service at the Seattle & American Lake campuses and all associated CBOC's and Valor's of VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS).
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Selective Placement Factors (SPF) are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for the position. Applicants who do not meet the SPF(s) are ineligible for further consideration. The SPFs for this position are: Current, valid state-issued Driver's License. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Duties include but are not limited to: Plan, layout, and fabricate and modify plumbing and piping systems including air, gas and vacuum systems. Works from building plans, blueprints, and as-built drawings. Interpret blueprints and use shop mathematics to layout angles and arcs, determine placement and elevation of piping systems and must be able to determine the appropriate pipe, joint and valve sizes. Operates pipe threading machines and hand tools. Operates core drilling rigs, pumps, rotary hammers and other trade related tools and equipment. Operates tools and devices as pipe threading tools, cullers, grinders, flaring and brazing equipment, welding and welding tools, micrometers, calipers, templates, various power tools, and hand tools. Assembles a list of pipe fitting materials and supplies needed to complete work assignments. Plans and layout plumbing/pipe fitting routing, openings, slants, and leveling of such systems relative to location and arrangement of equipment. Operates welding and welding tools, micrometers, calipers, templates, various power tools, and hand tools. Installs plumbing and piping systems. Troubleshoots, tests, repairs, and modifies building service systems and equipment, and the removal and demolition of old work, and the installation of new work. Maintains gauges, traps and thermostats. Modifies pipe fitting equipment fixtures and fittings. Repairs compressors, pumps and strainers. Maintains reducing valves, heating/cooling coils, and backflow preventing units. Work Schedule: Monday- Friday 8:00am- 4:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Pipefitter/PD40948A Physical Requirements: Physical demands are exhaustive and require considerable lifting of heavy objects up to 50 pounds. Prolonged standing in cramped positions, overhead work, climbing, bending, crawling under buildings and in attics and climbing high ladders to work on overhead systems is also required. Incumbent must be able to be physically cleared to wear a respirator.
