This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Mid Atlantic Healthcare Network (VISN 6), Richmond VA Medical Center (VAMC), in Environmental Management Service (EMS). The incumbent is responsible for textile care; laundry production at an affiliated and full tertiary care medical center, comprised of various healthcare wards and programs.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Laundry Machine Operators in the Laundry Textile Processing Plant of EMS are charged with the operation of a variety of laundry production equipment including the tunnel washer/extractor, large dryers (500lb), large washers (600Lb), small washers and dryers, garment finisher and textile finishing equipment. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Lead or Supervise Machine Tools Technical Practices Work Practices Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Principal Duties: Incumbent operates five washer/extractors which are usually in operation simultaneouslyprocessing various categories of textiles. Loads machines to rated capacities. Programsmicro-processors which are necessary for various classifications utilized. Uses the properwash formula programs based on classification and degree of soiling. Performs spottingprocedures to remove stains utilizing a variety of specialty chemicals. Maintains writtenrecords of work productivity, chemical usage, and incoming weights for reportingpurposes. Incumbent trains other machine operators in the correct procedures ofwasher/extractor machine operation and washing formulary and use. May make minoradjustments to equipment. Incumbent also operates commercial-type 110,200, and 400 pound dryer/tumblers and steam-heated garment finisher. This includes theloading and unloading of these machines. Work Schedule: Various Tours Including some Weekends and Holidays Position Description Title/PD#: Laundry Machine Operator/PD02841A Physical Requirements: Incumbent is subjected to continuous walking, standing, stooping, bending, and lifting. The handling of textiles may be heavy, wet or dry. May be required to do heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds). Must be able to move heavily loaded carts and work in a congested area. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
