The Advanced Medical Support Assistant/Health Benefits Advisor (AMSA/HBA) performs duties related to the receipt, intake, and indexing of health and administrative information in the Intake Section.

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Experience. Six months experience of clerical, office, customer service, or other administrative work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position. OR, Education. One year above high school. OR, Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Medical Support Assistant (Advanced), GS-6 Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. Candidates must demonstrate all of the KSAs below: Ability to collaborate and communicate with a wide range of medical clinicians across multiple disciplines (e.g. medical doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, clinical pharmacists, and nursing staff) to accomplish team goal setting to ensure medical care to patients is met. Ability to independently set priorities and organize work to meet deadlines, ensuring compliance with established processes, policies, and regulations. Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively, electronically, by phone, in person, and in writing, with internal and external customers. This may include preparing reports in various formats and presenting data to various organizational levels, as well as resolving patient concerns. Advanced knowledge of the technical health care process (including, but not limited to, scheduling across interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery and/or care in the community models and patient health care portals) as it relates to access to care. Advanced knowledge of policies and procedures associated with interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery and/or care in the community operational activities that affect patient flow, and patient support care administrative functions to include, but not limited to appointment cycles, outside patient referrals, follow-up care, overbooking, provider availability, etc. Advanced knowledge of medical terminology due to the technical nature of language utilized by clinicians. Physical Requirements: Physical aspects associated with work required of this assignment are typical for the occupation, see Duties section for essential job duties of the position. May require standing, lifting, carrying, sitting, stooping, bending, puling, and pushing. May be required to wear personal protective equipment and undergo annual TB screening or testing as conditions of employment. Work Environment: Work is performed in an office/clinic setting with minimal risks that requires normal safety precautions; the area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. However, the work environment requires someone with the ability to handle several tasks at once in sometimes stressful situations.
Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional This position is in the Medical Administration Service, Alexandria VA Health Care System (AVAHCS). This position provides support to the outpatient/admissions section of Medical Administration. The AVAHCS offers a full range of acute and chronic care services for Veterans residing in the South-Central Louisiana area. Services include, but are not limited to medicine, surgery, psychiatry, rehabilitative medicine, long term care, women's health, blind rehabilitation, mental health, substance abuse, and services for the seriously mental ill and nursing home care. There are numerous specialty clinics and laboratories. Duties include, but are not limited to: Performs clerical work in support of the care and treatment given to veterans and families, such as receiving patients to be admitted. Responds to technical questions regarding patient rights and responsibilities. Performs work involving the collection, compilation and/or tracking of data and statistical information in support of MAS. Receives and processes documents and reports (enrollment applications, payment information, eligibility information, means test, beneficiary travel, patient funds and decedent affairs) in accordance with establish procedures, ensuring completeness. Establishes benefit eligibility and the medical care benefits to which a patient has entitlement, by obtaining pertinent information from veteran. Completes the verification of interfacility consults in a timely and proficient manner. Accurately generates patient data cards for veterans applying for care using the Veterans Health Identification Card (VHIC) system.
