Job Description:
The Bus Driver is responsible for operating a VA Western NY Healthcare System owned 15-30 passenger bus. The driver transports wheelchair bound, and ambulatory patients, originating at and operating between Buffalo and Batavia Medical Centers.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/20/2025. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The incumbent is required to reach, bend, turn, and/or move hands, arms, feet and legs in order to operate vehicle controls. The driver is additionally required utilize moderate physical effort to push, lift up to 50 lbs. alone, with assistance from other workers, or with pallet moving equipment or carts, reach, bend, stretch, walk, shuffle, or move; hands, arms, legs, feet in order to load/unload passengers and cargo to and from vehicles. Driver must be conscious of fatigue and take the proper rest and or breaks. Working Conditions: The incumbent is exposed to all kinds of weather conditions while driving vehicles, and loading/unloading vehicles. The incumbent may be exposed to the dirt and fumes, and to the danger of serious accidents and/or the possibility of cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or from falling objects when loading and unloading vehicles.
Duties include but are not limited to: Transport wheelchair bound, and ambulatory patients, originating at and operating between Buffalo and Batavia Medical Center on public roads and highways approximately 1800 miles monthly in all weather conditions. Transports VAMC staff to and from a remote parking facility via local, predetermined urban routes. Transports staff and patients for sanctioned recreational trips and activities where a bus is required. Performs operator maintenance on all vehicles operated (e.g. monitoring fluid levels, replacing fuses and interior lights, checking tire pressure and hose connections, and washing the vehicle. Perform laundry/delivery truck assignments utilizing a 20 foot cargo truck. Responsible for the safe and proper loading, securing, weather protecting, and balancing of cargo. Loading and unloading is accomplished by hand or with pallet moving equipment or carts. Functions as a motor vehicle operator, and groundskeeper. May be assigned to operate the following: front end loaders, skid steers, lawn tractors, wheelchair vans, buses, sedans, lawnmowers, snow blowers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws and equipment as assigned. Performs other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 6:00AM-2:30PM. May be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays based on needs of the agency.
