The positions of the Maintenance Mechanic whose duties include a wide variety of tasks involving specific and general installation, repair, improvement and maintenance skills in the Building Maintenance Shop as part of the Maintenance and Repair Section of Facilities Management Service (FMS), at Lyons Campus of VA New Jersey Health Care System (VA NJHCS).

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. The duties entail general maintenance support work to accomplish facility level new construction, minor improvements and renovation work, including equipment maintenance, repair, assembly, disassembly and installation, or any other duties assigned by the Building Maintenance Foreman/Leader or other FMS Managers. The incumbent uses a variety of trade practices associated with General Mechanical principles at the journeyman level. The Maintenance Mechanic performs routine and complex installations of building structures utilizing masonry, woodworking/ carpentry and sheet metal working skills. Incumbent constructs and makes repairs to existing structures by utilizing building plans, drawings and by following verbal directions. Masonry work involves maintenance, repair and construction assignments utilizing various types of ceramic brick, cement block, face brick, glass block, terra cotta and artificial or natural stone. He/she performs inspections and maintenance of smoke/fire barriers in addition to all necessary repairs in order to maintain the standard and integrity of the barrier.The maintenance mechanic also does sheet metal work. The incumbent must have skill and knowledge to fabricate, repair and construct a variety of items from metal. Typically uses skill to create and make repairs to equipment throughout the facility. Must be able to choose the correct metal and distinguish material characteristics that can cause corrosion, disintegration and metal fatigue stress on components. Incumbent has the ability to create irregular angles, shapes, designs and pieces utilizing various metals while working powered and hand tools.Carpentry skills to perform install and repair of walls/floors/ceilings by being glued, fastened, screwed, bolted or by any acceptable means of attachment. Install/maintain items such as towel/soap dispensers, handrails, fans, glove boxes, sharp containers, etc.). Assemble, adjust and repair grab bars, guardrails, shelves, windows/shades, ceiling grids, locking devices, hinges, door closures, ceramic tiles, floor tiles, interior/exterior trim and other miscellaneous items.
