Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Marine Machinery Mechanic (Drag Tender) without more than normal supervision. Your resume must demonstrate that you have the ability to repair and maintain marine equipment such as valves, motors and winches by using hand and power tools along with measuring devices - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Job Elements: The skills, knowledge, abilities, and personal characteristics listed below are important to succeed in the job: Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Materials Trouble shooting Physical Efforts: Work requires considerable standing, climbing, stooping, and bending, all which can cause exertion of the lower back and extremities. Work on ladders requires incumbent to work overhead or in a stretched, cramped, or awkward positions. May lift and carry items weighing approximately 40 pounds. Working Conditions: Works inside or outside. Is subject to intermittent exposure to heat, cold, excessive noise, rain, and wind; falls from ladders, steps, and slippery decks in foul weather. Is exposed to eye hazards while engaged in chipping paint. Is subject to some danger of drowning in case of accident. Subject to cuts from hand or powered tools and danger from flying splinters and chips. Subject to dust, grease, and soiling of clothing and skin surfaces. Due to the age of the vessel, the nature of some work activities require the use of protective clothing and equipment (e.g. rubber boots, coveralls, goggles, aprons, gloves, respirator, etc.) as situations warrant. The use of respirator (e.g. full face, half-face canister, N95) is required while performing some work activities to minimize the risk of exposure to chemical fumes, dust, lead paint, and/or asbestos.
In this position, you will be assigned to a Class I (over 1400, c.y.) hopper dredge.
The dredge is characterized (electrically) by units ranging from fractional HP to several hundred or, several thousand HP with the majority carrying from 240 to 720 volts.
Makes scheduled and special operational checks of equipment to include switchboards, rheostats, relays, circuit breakers voltage regulators, dredge pump speed control system, telemotor steering system, engine order telegraph, etc.
Observes gauges, pistons, notes unusual conditions (heating, oil or grease loss, loose fittings, broken or inoperative units, etc.) and makes repairs or adjustments as required.
Makes periodic or special preventative maintenance checks of units.
Listens, dismantles, observes, replaces scheduled or worn elements, lubricates, packs, repairs, etc., as indicated.
Installs replacement or new equipment (floodlights, signals, fixtures, etc.)
Repairs, or participates in the repair, of any electrical unit on board (motors, pumps, generators, control panels, special equipment, etc.)
Itemizes materials and parts used. Changes instrument charts.
