Job Description:

The Oral Maxillofacial Surgery dental officer serves serves as a practicing dentist who performs a full range of professional dental procedures in connection with the treatment of commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems requiring standard corrective, restorative or preventive measures. This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until 9/30/2025 or until the position is filled.
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Dentist Basic Requirements A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~ Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. Duties include but are not limited to the following: Clinical Responsibilities (75%-85% of time) Provides a full range of services including assessment and using the most appropriate techniques in providing quality care in their subspecialty. Performs appropriate evaluations for patients. Provides a full range of therapeutic interventions to units/programs in the Medical Center to which they are assigned and has clinical privileges to practice including diagnostic assessment, medication evaluation and management. Participates effectively in team meetings and treatment planning conferences, and collaborates with multidisciplinary team members in a manner that enhances coordination of comprehensive patient care. Orders diagnostic tests and discriminates between normal and abnormal findings and makes appropriate treatment decisions. Ensures that the practice of medicine is consistent with Joint Commission, CARF, VA policies and procedures, clinical practice psychiatric guidelines, VISN standards, national statutes and regulations, medical record documentation, mandatory continuing education, and HIPPA policies. Specific tasks are itemized in the Credentialing and Privileging package. The following sections are enriching elements for the staff dentist/physician Academic/Teaching/Training/Administrative: Involved in performance improvement and quality assurance initiatives. Provides leadership guidance and consultation to staff on units to which assigned. Is involved in the supervision and teaching of house staff and other trainees assigned to unit as appropriate. Serves as a consultant to other medical center staff and trainees and assist in implementation of treatment plan as appropriate regarding their patients. Is responsible for timely completion of all clinical charting and documentation required by the Medical Center or healthcare system, as appropriate.
