A Polysomnographic Technician (Sleep Tech) works under the general supervision of a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) and the clinical director (M.D., D.O., or PhD) or designee to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders. This may involve polysomnography, diagnostic and therapeutic services, or patient care and education

Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a. Grade Determinations: GS-9 Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge required to provide all aspects of polysomnography services. 1. Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols, that pertain to Polysomnography. 2. Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements. 3. Ability to manage and supervise employees. Certification. Registration by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable for employees at this level. Physical Requirements: Physical standards are identified in VA Directive and Handbook 5019. The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as standing or walking for prolonged periods of time; frequent bending, reaching, stooping, and stretching to set up and take apart equipment and apparatus; lifting and repositioning patients; and pushing or pulling heavy objects such as oxygen tanks and/or equipment. The work may require specific physical characteristics and abilities such as above-average dexterity to perform intricate polysomnographic procedures.

Apply electrodes and sensors to meet accepted, published standards f. Perform appropriate physiological calibrations (biocalibrations) to ensure proper signals and adjust, if necessary. Performs pre-and-post calibrations. g. Follow "lights out" procedures to establish and document baseline values (body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory rates, heart rates, etc.) h. Monitoring of multiple physiological data throughout the test i. Staging of the sleep studies j. Identify and treat sleep related breathing disorders k. Perform polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free and adjust, if necessary.
