This position is located in the Publishing Office, Center for Exhibits and Interpretation, Office of Communications, Outreach and External Relations, Office Of The Librarian. The position description number for this position is 427369. The salary range indicated reflects the locality pay adjustments for the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan area. The incumbent of this position will work a flextime work schedule. This is a non-supervisory, bargaining unit position.
Applicants must have had progressively responsible experience and training sufficient in scope and quality to furnish them with an acceptable level of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision. Ability to communicate effectively in writing.** Ability to plan and manage projects.** Knowledge of reference sources and research techniques.** Ability to collaborate with others and provide consultation and liaison services. Ability to utilize computer technology. -Ability to communicate effectively other than in writing.
With assistance from higher level staff, performs basic functions in the editorial and publication process. As assigned, works with authors in identifying and selecting appropriate illustrations, obtains high-resolution scans, clears reproduction rights, and assembles art logs with appropriate captions and credits. Monitors production schedules to ensure timely completion of projects. Prepares basic manuscripts, art, and other necessary elements for transmittal to co-publishers. Maintains clean print and digital files at all stages and creates record copies upon completion of each project. Conducts basic and routine research and writes text for standard book-length works, including main narratives, prefaces, introductions, acknowledgements, captions, credits, bibliographies, indices, and other back matter. Performs routine image research to identify appropriate illustrative material in Library collections. Checks factual information to ensure authentic detail and records sources. Contributes content to non-book projects when necessary. With assistance from higher graded staff, edits proposals, manuscripts, and proofs; restructures, refines, or rewrites sentences, paragraphs, and/or sections. Edits texts to correct errors of spelling, grammar, punctuation, fact, or style and/or to improve clarity of expression. Attends Library events to identify potential topics and supports Office initiatives to solicit proposals from Library staff. Performs assignments in developing concepts for new works to highlight Library collections and in researching information for prospective publication plans.
