Job Description:

The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is November through May but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: November 2025 Open to the first 50 applicants. To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability to do the work of a Sign Painter (MVO) without more than normal supervision. (SCREEN OUT) Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic). Practices in Construction, Structure. Dexterity and Safety. Knowledge of materials. Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment, Ability to interpret instructions and specifications, etc. (other than blueprints), If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration. The Pacific West Region is recruiting for TEMPORARY seasonal positions not to exceed 6 months (1,039 hours) work in a service year. Dates of employment will vary depending on funding, weather conditions and visitation. Within regulatory limitations, the length of initial appointment may be shortened or extended depending on work availability and funding. The Sign Painter works independently to design, fabricate, and install pedestrian and vehicle wayfinding signs, traffic signs, regulatory and safety signs, visitor information signs and interpretive panels. Duties include: - Employee must have knowledge of sign construction and maintenance techniques and must be able to recognize existing and future maintenance problems. - Can teach and demonstrate sign installation methods and techniques to lower graded park staff and volunteers. - Performs and leads carpentry work at a high level of competency, often taking on the most complicated phases of project work assigned to the crew, and occasionally leads lower graded workers, volunteers, and interns in these tasks. -Employee must have knowledge of sign making related software programs Gerber Omega and Flexi and be able to adjust the size and shape of graphics and text to fit set parameters. -Transports tools, materials, employees, vehicles, and equipment with variety of vehicles weighing under 26,000 GVW to job sites. Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is required in bending, lifting, and using hand and power tools in fabricating and installing signs. As examples of typical strenuous activity, incumbent: carries objects weighing - 40 to 60 lbs, frequently hikes up to 8 miles daily and must be able to do so while carrying a backpack, signs and digging tools. The incumbent may spend up to nine hours a day digging holes and installing signs and posts. Working Conditions: This work is performed indoors and outdoors on high, narrow, steep, and congested trails at elevations that rise approximately 1000 to 2000 feet in above sea level This work is also performed in urban areas of high pedestrian and traffic congestion. It is performed in all types of weather and involves exposure to extreme heat, dampness, wind, dust, and noise. Sign installation involves the use of ladders and lifts which will expose the incumbent to heights sometime requiring fall protection. This job will also require the incumbent to work occasionally around and near Poison Oak and in areas where stinging insects and ticks may be a hazard.
