To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Physical Requirements: No manual labor is required above ordinary situations. Light carrying under 15 pounds, light lifting under 15 pounds, there may be some walking, standing, sitting and bending. Incumbent must be capable of using a computer given that all clinical charting is electronic.
A staff physician, Primary Care, is responsible for maintaining professional, technical, and administrative knowledge, competencies, and skills to provide effective, timely and quality responses to patients' health care needs. They are responsible for the primary care of at least 1200 patients and eight weekly clinic sessions. Physicians will achieve a ninety-percent compliance rate with the established Chronic Disease and Prevention indicators. Physicians will provide appropriate care for veterans ranging in age from 18 through the geriatric years, taking into consideration diagnosis and physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural needs. Personally responsible for the primary care of assigned patient panel across the continuum of care to include: comprehensive health assessment; case management; continuity and coordination of care between patient and extended long term care, outpatient, parent advocacy, and compliance with chronic disease and prevention indicators. a. Demonstrates knowledge, skills and abilities to: conduct comprehensive health assessments; determine diagnoses and health care needs; and to construct health care plans based on effective therapeutic ability, consultation, patient education and established practice guidelines. Demonstrate ability to coordinate patient care through patient management techniques within assigned Primary Care team. Maintain effectiveness in recognizing emergency/acute situations and intervening in an appropriate and effective manner. Documents patients' health care clearly, adequately and accurately as defined by medical record documentation, chronic disease and prevention indicators. Ensure supervision for primary care nurse practitioners, Physicians' Assistants, Students, and Allied Healthcare Students. Maintain clinical and administrative competencies. a. Complies with completing requirements for recredentialing and privileging. Complies with completion of VA required educational programs. Completes required number of CME for required state licensure. Identifies opportunities in clinical practice that could be improved through performance improvement activities. Prepares written results either for publication and/or local implementation. Participation in Medical Center committees and administrative assignments. Reports on pertinent information to FIRM members. Completes required performance improvement reviews, report of contact reviews and occurrence screens peer reviews in a timely manner. Effectively manages health services and serves as a consultant in Primary Care. Manages patient workload and wait times in compliance with the Customer Service Standards, to assure the most effective, efficient service to the patients. Coordinates special projects related to primary care activities of the Medical Center staff on ad hoc basis. Serves as role model and/or facilitator in maintaining ethical and professional standards.
