This position is located in the Regional Offices, Region Four, Mitigation Division. The ideal candidate will have experience with floodplain management and the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP); ordinance compliance; community planning, permitting, ordinance writing, as well as providing technical assistance to communities.
Current Federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent grade band in the Federal service. The time-in-grade and qualification requirements must be met within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement. To qualify for this position at the GS-11 level, you must possess one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal government, which has equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position. Experience may be obtained in the federal government, a state or local government, or private sector, and must demonstrate the following: Reviewing essential components of floodplain management (e.g., permits, ordinances, elevation certificates, etc.) and local floodplain management programs; AND Providing technical assistance and guidance to stakeholders on floodplain management regulations and best practices. What will I do in this position if hired? In this position, you will meet with Federal, state, tribal, and local officials to promote the virtues of mitigation through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Typical assignments include: Reviewing floodplain management programs as they are implemented by state, local, and tribal governments to reduce risk to life, property, and natural resources. Providing recommendations on how to improve programs through proposed changes to ordinances, planning objectives, permitting process changes, and code enforcement. Providing direct technical assistance, guidance and support to State, local and tribal governments in their implementation of the NFIP. Conducting briefing to promote the NFIP and other related programs. Reviewing community flood damage prevention ordinances and preparing official reports identifying hazard mitigation operating practices. Promotion Potential: Future promotions will be dependent on your ability to perform the duties at a higher level, the continuing need for an employee assigned to the higher level, and administrative approval.
