Job Description:

This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, US Coast Guard, Materials Handling Shop in Baltimore, MD.
Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired. Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements: * Ability to do the work of the position without greater than normal supervision (SCREENOUT). * Operation of Motor Vehicles * Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation) * Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean and in order) * Ability to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles) National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You will be responsible for operating tower cranes to unload and load supplies, materials and equipment aboard ships. Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include: * Loading and unloading supplies, materials and equipment such as foods, anchors, chains, steel plates, beams, pumps, lumber and similar items where masts, antenna and other obstructions are in the way. * Positioning objects such as guns, masts, hull components, radar equipment and sonar equipment where accuracy is important. * Lifting and placing small vessels from water to dock and dock to water. * Operating other equipment such as forklifts, mobile cranes, bridge cranes and trucks. * Performing pre-operating checks of oil, water, wire rope drums and limit switches.
