Job Description:
This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Office of the Chief Engineer, Construction Division, Construction Branch. The selectee will be responsible for setting the work pace, giving instructions, performing demonstrations of new work techniques and procedures, and reviewing the work of other Wood Crafters in the Branch.
You must meet all eligibility and qualification requirements by the closing date of the job announcement. You must meet the following SCREEN-OUT(S) required for this position. Ability to lead people in the performance of wood crafting or carpentry work. The Wood Crafter Leader must have journey level knowledge of wood crafting and carpentry techniques. *** This position is temporary in nature and is not to exceed 13 months. This is strictly a temporary appointment where there is no permanent need or permanent funding available for the work involved. It is a position that is subject to the project needs of the Agency. Therefore, the appointment could be terminated at any time due to shortage of work or shortage of funds without any advance notice. If project work continues however, it could be extended beyond the 13-month time frame at the sole discretion of the Agency. As a non-permanent employee, you may also be separated for failure to meet management’s expectations, with no advance notice. *** Tour of Duty: Night (7:00 PM - 5:30 AM) Monday - Thursday * Hours May Changed Due To Operational Needs of Management* The individual selected for this position will perform the following duties: Leader Responsibilities: Passes on to other workers the instructions received from supervisors and getting work started by distributing the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the work group. Works along with other workers, sets the pace and checks work while in progress. Ensures that supervisor's instructions on work sequences, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been followed. Demonstrates proper work methods and ensuring that needed plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are available and that needed materials are obtained. Maintains current knowledge on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives seeing to it that there is enough work to keep everyone in the work crew busy. Reports to supervisors on status and progress of work and causes of work delays. Answers supervisor's questions on overall work operations and problems. Follows all relevant safety rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures and utilizes knowledge of all OSHA safety rules and regulations to ensure that work progresses in a safe manner. Ensures the use of any required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Carpentry Projects Utilizes a wide knowledge of wood supplies and precision woodworking methods to plan and lay out work from specifications, blueprints, rough sketches, and verbal instructions, taking into consideration the tooling, durability, cost, strength, and appearance characteristics of a variety of softwoods, hardwoods, plywood, veneers, and wood substitutes for projects. Participates in pre-construction demolition projects, renovations, and new construction. Crafts High-Quality, Decorative Woodwork Selects cuts, turns, shapes, joins, bonds, fits, assembles, and decorates wooden materials and parts using a variety of hand and power woodworking tools, machines, and techniques to create superior and structurally reliable wood work which requires exact fitting and close weight, pressure, and size tolerances to construct specialty furniture.
