Job Description:

You will serve as a HEAVY MOBILE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC in the CRANE MAINTENANCE DIVISION, LIFTING AND HANDLING DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.
Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision: * The ability to diagnose failures, make minor repairs, adjustments, and major repairs to a large variety of heavy-duty transportation equipment of many types. * Determining the maximum wear allowances of parts and proper tolerances in the fitting of shafts, bearings, gears, pistons, etc. * Making proper adjustments to frictions, brakes, controls, and linkage. * Using injector test gauges, pyrometer gauges, compression gauges, micrometers, feeler gauges, pressure gauges, hydraulic jacks and presses. * Ability to use blueprints, sketches, and specifications. You will disassemble, repair, and assemble machinery and equipment components such as hoist, travel, swing, and boom assemblies.
You will remove, install, and align travel, hoist, brake, and drive motors; gasoline and diesel engines.
You will fabricate eight-inch piping to exhaust systems.
You will perform machining operations associated with repairs such as reboring, cylinders, bearings, bushings, turning or grinding shafts, pistons, brake drums, wheels, and manufacture of replacement parts.
