This vacancy is for a GS-0028-9, ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION SPECIALIST located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, USCG AIR STATION NEW ORLEANS in Belle Chasse, Louisiana.
To qualify at the GS-09 grade level, applicants must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in the federal sector. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. Specialized experience must include the following: Utilizing principles, concepts and methods of environmental protection work Applying laws, regulations, policies, and procedures related to environmental protection and the ability to interpret and explain the reasons and purposes for applying corrective/preventative measures and procedures Conducting routine maintenance and upkeep of aviation ground support equipment, or other mechanical expertise Identifying and forecasting preventative maintenance cycles, procure required consumable materials and parts, and complete required maintenance and/or inspections on ground support equipment in a timely manner OR Master's or equivalent graduate degree OR 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree OR LL.B. or J.D., if related OR A combination of specialized experience and education. NOTE: Education can be substituted for experience at this grade level. You will serve as an ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION SPECIALIST and be responsible for administering a multifaceted hazardous waste management and hazardous material environmental compliance program for all activities at Air Station New Orleans under the guidance of the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base New Orleans EPS. Additionally, the EPS is responsible to the Engineering Officer for the management of Aviation Ground Support Equipment (AGSE) to include personally conducting preventative maintenance, repair, and/or inspections of tow bars, tow tractors, power carts, fuel trucks, and other AGSE. Day-to-day duties consist of the management of support equipment, maintaining a stock and inventory of hazardous materials, procuring hazardous materials and parts/consumables as needed for air station activities, coordination of disposal of hazardous waste, and managing related records and databases. The EPS must be able to lift and carry 70 pound containers. The EPS may also be asked to conduct additional duties as requested by their supervisor or Engineering Officer. Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include: Maintain mechanical readiness and manage preventative maintenance program of aircraft support equipment Train and supervise personnel on safe operation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of AGSE Manage and execute hazardous material and pollution prevention programs Ensure sufficient stock of consumable materials are on hand through inventory tracking and proactive ordering Update, maintain, and ensure compliance with local unit and DoD installation pollution prevention plans Note: The work is essentially physical. The specialist is exposed to hot, dirty, dusty and other unpleasant conditions. The specialist must be able to lift up to 70 pound containers, shift/relocate other heavy materials by using a forklift, pallet jack, rolling containers and heavy ladders. Walking and standing for long periods of time are required. The wearing of protective equipment will frequently be required. The specialist may be exposed to hazardous vapors, fumes, liquids, powders and solids, flammable materials, acid, alkali and toxic chemicals. The specialist will be subject to working near moving equipment (trucks, forklifts, etc.). The specialist may require annual physical checks under the OMMP program and a hearing conservation program. Drivers license is required.
