This position is assigned to the grounds & transportation unit of the Engineering service at VA Medical Center, Canandaigua, New York.
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Moderate exertion is required in operating, turning, backing and controlling vehicles that carry heavy loads or large numbers of people. The incumbent must be able to perform tasks necessitating heavy physical effort such as maneuvering and pushing loaded laundry carts, lifting supplies and assisting non-ambulant patients. He/she will be required to do arduous work in the loading and unloading of laundry and supplies. This position requires considerable use of arms and legs while operating vehicles and equipment. Incumbent must be able to perform tasks necessitating heavy physical effort such as lifting litters with patients into and out of any wheelchair van. He/she must be able to assist non-ambulant patients into and out of staff cars. In lifting litters and assisting patients, incumbent will be responsible for lifting in excess of 100 pounds. They are required to do arduous work in the loading and unloading of supplies, laundry, recyclables and trash. 11lis position requires considerable us of arms and legs while operating equipment. The driver is required to work outside and is exposed to bad weather conditions while loading and unloading patients, laundry and supplies, and perfonning snow removal duties. Operator drives in all types of traffic and weather and is exposed to serious accidents. The incumbent is subject to cuts, bruises and sprains, as a result of accidents while driving or when loading and unloading laundry, supplies and performing general duties. Major duties and responsibilities include: Transports soiled and clean laundry between the Canandaigua, Syracuse, Bath and Albany VA Medical Centers. Operates trucks with 1-ton capacity, dump trucks and tractors for snow and trash removal, moving of furniture and recyclable materials. Operates trash compactor trucks with power take off unit and air brakes. Operates wheelchair vans, wheelchair buses and passenger busses up to 44 passengers. Transports patients to and from appointments and activities. Possesses the ability to perform minor repairs to a vehicle or equipment. Reports any suspected malfunction of equipment to avoid costly repairs and unnecessary down time Reads road maps and interpret instructions. Operates motor vehicles in all road conditions. Performs general labor duties such as: pruning and removal of trees, lawn preparation, grading, seeding, and in road repairing and maintenance.
