The incumbent of this position is Maintenance Mechanic (Leader) in the Building Mechanical Maintenance Unit in Engineering Service at the Dayton VA Medical Center (VAMC), Dayton Ohio. This position performs a variety of tasks involved in the maintenance and upkeep of fixtures, equipment, utilities, buildings and structures at the Dayton VA Medical Center. The duties of this position will include painting, plumbing, HVAC, and carpentry.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The Maintenance Mechanic (Leader), WL-4749-09, is responsible for performing and leading complex painting, plumbing, and carpentry tasks at the Dayton VA Medical Center, while also guiding a team of mechanics in safe, efficient work practices. Painting Duties Prepares and finishes a wide range of surfaces using advanced painting trade techniques such as marbling, graining, mottling, and decorative texturing. Mixes, tints, tones, and blends coating materials to achieve required match, texture, thickness, and finish. Applies coatings with brushes, rollers, spray guns, and specialty tools; ensures surfaces meet professional trade standards. Selects appropriate materials, devices, and methods independently with minimal supervisory input. Plumbing Duties Installs, modifies, and repairs utility, supply, and disposal systems including water, gas, sewage, and fire sprinkler systems. Works from blueprints and building plans to lay out routes, slopes, and placement of lines, valves, and equipment. Connects and tests systems for proper operation using accepted trade methods. Interprets technical drawings and applies shop math for accurate system layout and installation. Carpentry Duties Constructs, installs, repairs, and modifies structural and non-structural wood and composite items such as framing, staircases, trim, cabinetry, counters, forms, and partitions. Reads and interprets blueprints and specifications; independently plans work from layout to completion. Uses industrial woodworking machinery, precision tools, and joining methods (e.g., miters, mortise and tenon, laminates) to ensure strength, accuracy, and quality finish. Leadership Duties Leads a team of three mechanics by assigning work, setting the pace, and demonstrating proper methods. Ensures adequate tools and materials are available; checks progress and finished work for compliance with standards. Provides guidance on procedures and safety rules; maintains housekeeping and reports delays or issues to supervisors. Works primarily off-hours (2nd or 3rd shift), often independently, with minimal supervision. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00AM - 4:30PM Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Mechanic/PD917260 Physical Requirements: Work requires prolonged standing, bending, kneeling, climbing ladders/scaffolds, and lifting up to 100 lbs. Duties are performed both indoors and outdoors, in public areas, confined spaces, and mechanical rooms, with exposure to noise, dust, fumes, weather, and trade-related hazards. Uses protective gear (gloves, respirators, ear protection, etc.) as required.
