Job Description:
This position serves as an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic within the Facilities Management & Engineering Service (FES) at the VA Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. The incumbent is responsible for the operation, cleanliness, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of all air conditioning, refrigeration, ventilation, and heating systems and all other associated equipment.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Major Duties include but are not limited to: Performs daily checks on all Critical Refrigeration and HVAC systems. Makes in person checks and utilize the temperature and humidity monitoring system, Metasys Energy Management System, Ocean view system, documenting findings, reporting any issues to supervisor. Have work orders generated for any needed repairs, assist in finding parts to be ordered, and keeping affected services up to speed on parts ordered and repairs. Maintain proper Temperatures, Humidity and Space Pressures according to VA Policies, maintain air filters, belts pulleys, motors, bearings, blowers, greasing, clean coils, assure all PM records are kept up on all HVAC, Refrigeration, and related equipment. Assure all Ice Machines, Ice Maker, Water Fountain Preventive Maintenance and Water Filter Changes at Baltimore Medical Center, Fort Meade, Linthicum Heights, Glen Burnie, Annex, Rosedale Campus are completed to VA Policy and recorded in the system. They assure all Medical, Pharmacy other Critical Refrigerator and Freezer PMs at Baltimore Medical Center, Fort Meade, Linthicum Heights, Glen Burnie, Annex, Rosedale Campus are completed to VA Policy standards and documented in the system. Responsible for the Operation, Cleanliness, Maintenance (preventive and reactive), Troubleshooting, Installation and Repair of all Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, Ventilation, Chiller Purge Units, Heating Systems, Geothermal HVAC, Dehumidifiers, Domestic and Commercial Refrigerators & Freezers. Conducts preventive maintenance, troubleshoot and make repairs, new installations, and needed alterations to all HVAC, Cook and Chill Equipment, Refrigeration, Medical Gas, Oxygen, Vacuum, Air Compressors, Dental Air Compressors, Refrigerated Air Driers, Desiccant Air Dryers, Alarm Panels, Outlets, and other associated equipment, Gas Furnaces, Oil Burners, Geothermal Heat Pumps, Window Units, Electric Heat Pumps, Mini Splits, large Commercial DX units, Dehumidifiers, Computer Server Room CRAC Units, Steam and Hot Water Unit Heaters, VAV Boxes, Through the Wall Heat Pumps, all large Air Handling Units with Chilled Water, Reheat Units, all large and small Exhaust Fans, Change Air Filters, Belts, Grease, Clean Coils, Change out Electric motors on HVAC and all associated Pumps up to 100HP. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00am - 3:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic/PD24175A Physical Requirements: The work requires a considerable amount of standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and/or uncomfortable positions. The incumbent carries, lifts and handles parts weighing up to 50 pounds. Working Conditions: The work is performed inside and outside with exposure to all kinds of weather. The work area may be hot, dirty, wet, dusty, and greasy. Incumbent is subject to cuts, abrasions, burns, broken bones, electrical shock, infections, bites, exposure to inhalation of harmful chemical fumes, irritation of eyes, etc. The incumbent may wear protective clothing.
