Job Description:
Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System (GCVHCS) in Biloxi, Mississippi, is a 1c facility comprised of a medical facility, community living center, blind rehabilitation center, primary care, specialty care, and community-based outpatient clinics. The Medical Instrument Technician (MIT) (Electrocardiography) (EKG) is a member of the Cardiology Department located within Medicine Service.
Basic Requirements: Citizenship. Citizenship of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.) Education. There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels. See the grade requirements part of this standard for information regarding educational substitutions. Licensure or Certification. License or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. For certain functional areas at the higher levels or supervisory assignments, specific certifications appropriate to the specialty are indicated in this standard under "Titles and Certification/Registrations". For all specialties identified in this standard, Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable. Training which does not result in official certification does not meet this definition. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-08 Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be experience which provided knowledge of advanced specialized procedures, the pharmacology related to this occupation, and knowledge of related acute disorders and diseases and their effects on organs and methods of treatment. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. KSAs 1, 2, 3, and 4 are appropriate for all positions at this level. KSAs 5 and 6 are to be used in accordance with their appropriateness for the specific assignment. 1. Knowledge of pharmacology related to specialized procedures. 2. Ability to provide briefings and orientations to hospital staff including physicians. 3. Knowledge of a variety of related acute disorders and diseases, their effects on organs, and methods of treatment. 4. Ability to perform more complex procedures such as SAECG (Signal Averaged ECG), Tilt table monitoring, electrophysiology monitoring, and event monitoring. *5. Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training. *6. Ability to manage and supervise employees. Preferred Experience: Experience in cardiac rhythm interpretation, EKGs, holter monitors, cardiac devices, and stress testing. Knowledge of pharmacology and chemistry to understand drug action and effects. Excellent customer service skills and ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels. Physical Requirements: Physical aspects associated with work required of this assignment are typical for the occupation, see Duties section for essential job duties of the position. May require standing, lifting, carrying, sitting, stooping, bending, puling, and pushing. May be required to wear personal protective equipment and undergo annual TB screening or testing as conditions of employment. Work Environment: Work is performed in an office/clinic setting with minimal risks that requires normal safety precautions; the area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. However, the work environment requires someone with the ability to handle several tasks at once in sometimes stressful situations.
Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional The MIT (EKG) performs the full range of Electrocardiograms diagnostic procedures and related examinations, monitors tracings to identify arrhythmias and when gross abnormalities appear; when to repeat certain procedures, when to stop procedures, and when to get the immediate attention of a physician. They evaluate test results to determine appropriate machine adjustments and use alternative techniques and procedures when established procedures do not accomplish acceptable results. Duties performed include, but are not limited to the following: Performs EKG's on Inpatient/Outpatients as ordered by providers on a daily basis; The technician analyzes holter monitor data utilizing CardioDay software, removes artifacts from recording, and ensures high quality reports are transferred to MUSE for provider interpretation; Assists with immediate patient management in cardiology clinic when required per local site policies; Performs preventive maintenance of the equipment and coordinates service with biomedical engineering including help with researching/obtaining quotes for parts/services needed; Assists in the ordering of supplies, stocking, and cleaning exam rooms on a daily basis; Assists in the ordering of medications for procedures performed in the department; Maintains EKG, stress test and Holter reports on the MUSE system; The technician assists with completing/uploading cardiac long-term monitors into CPRS utilizing Vista Image Capture. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
