The position is located in the Phoenix Health Care System, Phoenix, AZ as an Air Conditioning Mechanic - Boiler Plant Operator Lead. The incumbent functions as a Working Leader and perform trade and labor duties as member of the work crew that he/she leads within the Operations Section of the Boiler Plant and Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and Refrigeration shop of the Maintenance and Operations section of Engineering.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Working leads must be capable of climbing over and under equipment, onto catwalks, roof areas, in and out of confined spaces and other isolated areas. Leads must be able to work in uncomfortable positions and conditions over extended periods of time. Work typically requires bending, stooping, crawling, climbing ladders and standing for extended periods. Leads must be able to frequently lift and carry mechanical parts and chemical supplies weighing 40 pounds and more unassisted and well over 90 pounds with assistance.
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: AC Equipment Mechanic, installs, repairs, troubleshoots balances and makes adjustments to the HVAC and refrigeration units. Complex disassembly, repair and reassembly to various types of HVAC compressors, a variety to refrigerant controls such as oil pressure, thermostatic and automatic expansion valves, unloaders and low ambient as well as various types of pumps, chillers, receivers and evaporators. Overhauls floats, diaphragms and seals, aligns motors and sheaves, makes repairs, installs and maintains pneumatic and electrical controls for these systems. the technician maintains Operating Room and Laboratory coolers, freezers, incubators to maintain plus or minus two degrees of set point. Checks and replaces or cleans air conditioning filters, installs flexible and sheet metal duct from start to finish and other related work as required. Operates a centralized air conditioning plant that serves a complex hospital system. Installs and maintains data sensing and switching devices with interrelated functions to control flow and temperature of the air, working fluids, steam, water, chemical water treatment, refrigerated air dryers, laminar air flow units, and electronic air cleaners. Services computing assemblies, actuating mechanisms, display indicators and related controls that are collectively combined and integrated into a complete unit of information gathering devices. Maintains repairs and calibrates such major items as mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic and electrical/electronic precision measurement test consoles. The incumbent will know how to check, operate, adjusts, record, maintain, monitor, and repair a modern central plant. Responsible for all machinery within the boiler plant and has the ability to perform all required boiler safety device testing, per VHA Directive 1810 and VHA Boiler and Associated Plant Safety Device Testing Manual, most current addition. Monitors and operates the graphic control section. Preferred Experience: Journeyman level experience in HVAC and Boiler maintenance and repair. Ability to work with minimal supervision.
