Job Description:

The Health Technician performs ongoing patient care duties in the Dermatology Clinic of the Atlanta VA Health Care System as a part of Nursing Specialty Service.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/26/2025. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-5 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Completing clinical reminders, obtaining patient health history, chief complaints, medication history, and identification of health-related conditions that may impact the patient's health status; assisting outpatient licensed staff with the delivery of care to patients with complex, specialized, and potentially life-threatening situations; assisting in behavioral/psychiatric situations in an outpatient setting; operating specialized medical equipment to obtain diagnostic and therapeutic outcomes; (e.g, ECG, blood pressure, and glucometer); preparation of lab specimens and transfer to the lab for processing (Examples: Labeling, placing in the proper bin or tube system). OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have completed one full year of graduate education that is directly related to the work of this position. TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED - must have Conferred date of degree for full credit. Education cannot be credited without documentation. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond one full year of graduate education that is directly related to the work of this position. Major duties and responsibilities will include: Performs routine skin and wound care for at risk patients Uses medical Dermatology instruments and equipment to perform diagnostic testing and preliminary work ups Assists in managing clinic flow Responsible for reusable medical equipment disinfection Performs standardized and routine procedures that are non-invasive. Performs preliminary examination and evaluation of patients, including intake interviews and vital signs. Conducts exit interviews and provides patient (self-care) teaching with documentation and specific instructions Documents test results, patient status, history, findings, treatments and response to treatment in the electronic medical record. According to VA guidelines, prepares and delivers specimens to the laboratory utilizing tracking tools Assist Dermatologist with major and minor surgery in accordance with VA policies and procedures Ensures compliance with all regulatory agency standards, including state, federal and Joint Commission Performing related duties as required. Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
