The Chief of Staff (Dental Officer) detail is for the Roseburg VA Medical Center. The detail is intended to last for 120 days. *If selected for this temporary detail, appointment may be extended or made permanent without further competition.
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of dental surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Completion of an approved residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Leadership skills in design, implementation and management of clinical and academic programs. Managerial experience in supervising administrators, nursing, and physicians. Clinical experience, understanding on complex healthcare facilities and ensuring performance of clinical staff and delivery of healthcare services. Experience in reviewing and implementing solutions to ensure quality healthcare is provided. Physical Requirements: Incumbent must be physically and mentally able to efficiently perform the essential functions of the position without hazard to self or others. Work requires no extraordinary physical exertion, although there is some requirement to navigate across various sections of the physical campus. Incumbent may need to climb stairs. Duties require periods of standing, walking, bending and carrying light objects. Incumbent must maintain a valid driver's license and be able to safely operate a motor vehicle. Basic Life Support (BLS) is required.
The Chief of Staff, under a performance contract with the Facility Director, serves as advisor for all clinical operations within the health care system. Due to the complexity of the position not all responsibilities, duties and requirements can be specifically notated; this is a high level position that requires expert knowledge, expert decision making and the proven ability to implement decisions and programs and hold staff accountable; a large portion of this position is understanding information, taking appropriate and timely actions, ensuring processes are in place for permanent resolution and that auditing can/will occur. Major duties also include but are not limited to: Promotes the development of health care professionals in the health care system through counseling, mentoring, teaching, and encouraging self-assessment. Contributes to an environment that provides educational activity, and administrative planning and evaluation based on integration and application of current health care principles. Establishes mechanisms whereby the health care system administration, and other VHA components are informed, in a timely manner, of clinical program developments that affect them. Takes an active role as a health care system management team member, providing advice and counsel in defining and accomplishing the health care system and VACO mission and goals. Represents the health care system, internally and externally, in such a manner as to reflect positively on the health care system, the VISN and the VHA. Serves as professional liaison of the health care system to DVA and Federal facilities, the community, affiliates, media, congressional offices, and constituent organizations. Maintains and promotes high ethical and clinical standards that are carried into decision making processes Promotes constructive problem resolution in an environment of competing priorities. Achieves corporate objectives in quality of services and programs throughout the health care system, as evaluated by internal indicators, regulatory reviews and accreditation, and patient satisfaction data.
