Madison VA is seeking full-time Emergency Medicine nocturnist physician, board-certified or board-eligible, to deliver high-quality care within our innovative and progressive healthcare system serving our veteran population. The physician will serve as the attending provider and participate fully in patient care and departmental duties.
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Board certification or eligibility is preferred. Physical Requirements: The work requires standing or walking for a major portion of the work day. Physical requirements could consist of a variety of standing, walking, twisting, turning, sitting, bending, pushing, carrying and light lifting.
Major duties include, but not limited to: Patient Management: Conducting examinations of inpatients, diagnosing medical conditions, developing treatment plans, and modifying care strategies based on patients' overnight progress. Admissions: Approving the admission of new patients to the hospital, typically originating from the emergency department, and overseeing their initial management. Emergency Response: Serving as the primary responder to medical emergencies within the hospital during overnight hours. Supervision: Overseeing and supervising other medical staff, including resident physicians and nursing personnel, during the night shift. Cross-Coverage: Acting as the primary point of contact for addressing issues related to currently admitted patients. Documentation: Ensuring all required medical records and documentation are accurate, comprehensive, and completed in a timely manner. Collaboration: Communicating effectively with the daytime medical team to facilitate seamless handoffs and ensure continuity of care. Immediate assessment and stabilization: Rapidly evaluate patient severity and stabilize critical conditions to prevent mortality or further disability. Diagnosis and treatment: Diagnose and manage a wide range of conditions, including trauma, cardiac emergencies, respiratory issues, and severe infections, utilizing various diagnostic tools and techniques. Diagnostic and procedural skills: Order and interpret diagnostic tests such as X-rays, EKGs, and blood work. Perform necessary procedures and basic surgeries, including suturing, intubation, and chest tube placement. Treatment plan development: Develop initial treatment strategies and administer appropriate medications. Patient and family education: Clearly communicate medical conditions and treatment plans to patients and their families. Collaboration and leadership: Coordinate with other healthcare professionals, including nurses and specialists, to ensure comprehensive patient care. May also oversee emergency medical staff. Referrals and follow-up: Determine whether patients can be safely discharged, require hospitalization, or need referrals to specialists for ongoing care. Continuing education: Keep current with advancements and best practices in emergency medicine to ensure high-quality patient care. VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package.
