Job Description:

The Advanced Medical Support Assistant in Community Care works under the direct supervision of the Supervisory Medical Support Assistant. The workload is highly unpredictable an incumbent must be flexible and adaptive to remain responsive to multiple demands made by internal and external sources.
Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Experience. Six months experience of clerical, office, customer service, or other administrative work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position. OR, Education. One year above high school. OR, Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for employment listed above, the following education and experience criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Medical Support Assistant (Advanced), GS-6 Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. Candidates must demonstrate all of the KSAs below: Ability to collaborate and communicate with a wide range of medical clinicians across multiple disciplines (e.g. medical doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, clinical pharmacists, and nursing staff) to accomplish team goal setting to ensure medical care to patients is met. Ability to independently set priorities and organize work to meet deadlines, ensuring compliance with established processes, policies, and regulations. Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively, electronically, by phone, in person, and in writing, with internal and external customers. This may include preparing reports in various formats and presenting data to various organizational levels, as well as resolving patient concerns. Advanced knowledge of the technical health care process (including, but not limited to, scheduling across interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery and/or care in the community models and patient health care portals) as it relates to access to care. Advanced knowledge of policies and procedures associated with interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery and/or care in the community operational activities that affect patient flow, and patient support care administrative functions to include, but not limited to appointment cycles, outside patient referrals, follow-up care, overbooking, provider availability, etc. Advanced knowledge of medical terminology due to the technical nature of language utilized by clinicians. Preferred Experience: Proficient in CPRS, Microsoft word & Excel, Customer service skills, and can work independently. Physical Requirements: Physical aspects associated with work required of this assignment are typical for the occupation, see Duties section for essential job duties of the position. May require standing, lifting, carrying, sitting, stooping, bending, puling, and pushing. May be required to wear personal protective equipment and undergo annual TB screening or testing as conditions of employment. Work Environment: Work is performed in an office/clinic setting with minimal risks that requires normal safety precautions; the area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. However, the work environment requires someone with the ability to handle several tasks at once in sometimes stressful situations.
Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional This position is in the Community Care Service, Alexandria VA Health Care System (AVAHCS). This position provides support to the Supervisory AMSA and Business Manager of the Community Care Service. The AVAHCS offers a full range of acute and chronic care services for Veterans residing in a 23-parish catchment area in Louisiana. Services include but are not limited to medicine, surgery, psychiatry, rehabilitative medicine, long term care, women's health, blind rehabilitation, mental health, substance abuse, services for the seriously mental ill and nursing home care. There are numerous primary care and specialty care clinics as well as ancillary support departments. Duties include, but are not limited to: Performs independently and carries out programs within the framework of applicable laws, procedures, and objectives. Process Community Care consults per administrative guidelines, verify eligibility to receive community care, coordinate care through appropriate channel (direct, TPA, Provider Agreement), coordinate care, schedule appointments in VA system for community appointments, confirm care received, request medical documents from community provider/TPA portal, performs administrative functions in VA systems and perform other duties as assigned. Assists staff, Veterans, community vendors and Claims Processing Unit with identifying and resolving issues pertaining to consult status, authorization details, payment questions, care coordination and other issues as needed. Addresses problems and provides solutions and informs the Supervisory MSA once rectified and seeks further guidance for extenuating circumstances as needed. Complete work assignments with relative independence and minimal guidance and carries out programs within the framework of applicable laws, procedures, and objectives. Personally, adheres the deadlines for work completions. He or she assumes responsibility in work assignments in accordance with regulations and independently and resolves most conflicts by using considerable judgment and interpretation.
