Job Description:

The Lead DRT (MRI) will help for all first-line coordination of activities within the MRI Service Area of Diagnostic Imaging. The Lead MRI Technologist is involved in ensuring compliance with ACR Accreditation Requirements. Incumbent will oversee compliance of specific FDA, VHA, and Joint Commission standards as they pertain to MRI Safety. Performs and demonstrates proficiency and understanding in a variety of routine to complex MRI procedures at a technical level for diagnostic purposes.

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-10 Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*). Ability to provide feedback to supervisor on technical aspects of work. *Ability to resolve informal employee complaints. *Ability to monitor and report on the status and progress of work and make adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established procedures. Ability to perform general and specialized diagnostic radiologic procedures in advanced levels of complex treatment situations. Physical Requirements: The physical demands of the work includes: Heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over; moderate carrying, 15-44 pounds; pushing up to 4 hours; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers, good dexterity (both hands required); prolonged walking, prolonged standing; repeated bending; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted); speed in working; and emotional stability. Must have the ability to stand and work while wearing a lead apron for possibly long periods of time.
Major duties include, but are not limited to: The Lead MR Technologist has a responsibility to recognize and exhibit excellent MRI Safety Practices To comply with published and communicated safety procedures To immediately report observed safety infractions and unsafe working conditions and to report in a timely fashion work related illnesses and injuries to the MRI Supervisor. The Lead MR Technologist directs patient flow in a smooth, systematic, continuous and timely manner to ensure that quality patient care is executed in an efficient and effective manner and assists in interviewing applicants. The incumbent trains other department personnel and assists in the clinical education of radiologic technology students as well as assisting with in-services within the department. The incumbent will report any competency issues to the MRI Supervisor and or MRI Safety Officer that could cause adverse safety outcomes. The Lead MRI Technologist will help develop new policies and update them as new equipment is placed with the MRI Supervisor. The technologist will help include but not limited to new construction for the future of our new MRI department which includes continuance of protocols with stronger magnetic fields, responsible for application s from vendors and new research protocols for our new MRI. The Lead MR Technologist will help prepare the daily work schedule to make sure that sufficient number of staff are available for patient appointments. He/she assures that staff obtains safety screening and consent for high-risk patients when necessary. The incumbent will help monitor proper and safe equipment operation. Assists staff to confirm that the images meet requirements of the radiologists. Reviews and submits reports on request showing types and number of examinations conducted. Performs other related duties as directed, The Lead MR Technologist will help ensure consistency of protocols.
