This position is located under the Office of the Associate Director, Facilities Management Service, Environmental Management Service section at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. This position is under the direct supervision of the Supervisor, Environment of Care Specialist.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Major duties include, but are not limited to: The incumbent rotates through various work sites in the facility during the tour of duty to meet workload demands. This may involve assisting with loading soiled linen carts and unloading bulk clean linen carts from the linen truck on a rotating basis. The incumbent is responsible for transporting bulk clean linen to the sorting and classification area. There, the incumbent may also be required to sort soiled linen items according to classification procedures. Clean items are stored neatly and orderly, and stored stock is constantly rotated to prevent shelf deterioration or the need for reprocessing. The incumbent shakes out wet linen items, checking for knots, damage, and stains before placing them in the dryer. Any soiled or damaged items are reported to the Textile Care Management Officer. The incumbent receives items at the receiving end of the ironer and may fold rough dry items by hand. The incumbent maintains a clean and safe work environment and performs duties safely and efficiently. The incumbent assemblies load according to quotas established for each Medical Center, counts and stacks standard-use items on turn-around carts, and records quantities on daily report sheets. Items are stacked on carts in an order that ensures effective utilization of space, covered to prevent contamination during transit, tagged for proper destination, and loaded onto trailers or trucks in a space-conserving manner. The incumbent ensures all bags of specialty items, carts of surgery linens, and uniforms are collected, recorded, and loaded onto the truck. The load is then secured to prevent shifting, using bars, straps, and ropes as needed. The incumbent practices universal precautions in performing duties, using appropriate safety and infection control procedures. The incumbent is responsible for keeping the work area and equipment clean. The incumbent participates in semi-annual linen inventories and performs other related textile care duties as assigned. The incumbent may also serve as a backup truck driver on occasion. Work Schedule: 7:00a.m. - 3:30 p.m., weekends and holidays as required Position Description Title/PD#: Laundry Worker/PD04450A Physical Requirements: The incumbent is required to stand and/or walk continuously on hard surface floors. They will frequently lift stacks and bundles of linens weighing up to 25 pounds. Additionally, they will push heavy loaded carts onto trucks. The incumbent is exposed to unpleasant odors and potentially infectious organisms from soiled linens, patient clothing, and employee uniforms. They will also be subjected to noise and hot, humid conditions. There is a risk of cuts and bruises from handling carts and machinery, as well as minor burns from steam pipes and the flatwork ironer. Additionally, the incumbent may encounter inclement weather while carrying out their duties.
