Job Description:

This position is within the Maintenance and Operations Section; Engineering Service at Overton Brooks VA Medical Center, a tertiary care, university affiliated, active research, medical facility. The primary responsibility would be operating a valet shuttle, a gasoline or electric powered vehicle with a seating capacity of six (6) to fourteen (14) passengers.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 11/10/2025. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The employee must be in good physical condition and may exert moderate physical effort in performing tasks such as lifting and moving objects weighing over 50 pounds. They must be able to stoop, crouch, reach, and lift materials - may be required to assist patients or employees with limited mobility, on and off the shuttle bus, vans or carts. Work is primarily outside in all kinds of weather but may be performed in all areas of the hospital environment, including working outside in hot and cold weather where it is often dusty and dirty and in the hospital in medical, surgical, and psychiatric wards and research areas. Exposure to extremes of hot and cold temperatures and all types of weather conditions while working outdoors are possible. It may be hot, cold, humid, wet, outdoors, indoors, underground in storage tanks, in a ditch, etc. Work outdoors may, at times, be in inclement weather. Work performed may also include general labor duties such as cleaning various engineering storage and equipment rooms, and engineering shops, moving supplies and materials, picking up trash and debris, and assisting craftsmen such as assisting carpenters with installation and demolition of walls, pipe fitters in repair and installation of water and sewer lines, etc. Use of appropriate verbal communication according to the age and physical and emotional needs of the customer is required. Meeting the needs of customers while supporting the medical center mission is expected.
Major duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to): Lifting and moving objects weighing over 50 pounds Assist patients and employees on and off shuttle buses, vans and carts Keep shuttle carts clean, fueled and ready for use Maintain a valid driver's license Work Schedule: 9:30AM to 6:00PM, Monday thru Friday, subject to change based on the needs of the facility Position Description Title/PD#: Motor Vehicle Operator/PD07471A Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): Not Approved Relocation/Recruitment Incentives: Not authorized Driver's License: A current, valid state-issued Driver's License is required for this position.
