The Maintenance Mechanic Leader is a working leader in charge of all work assigned to General Maintenance Unit. The incumbent will lead a maintenance team of over 15 employees, working individually or in groups, who may be maintenance mechanics, carpenters, painters, locksmith, and visual information team. The mix of occupations led will be based on the needs of the various project. The incumbent is responsible for providing instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines.

Duties may include but are not limited to: The incumbent will pass on to other workers instructions received from supervisor, and starts work (e.g., by assigning the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the group led). Insures that needed plans, blueprints, material, and tools are available, and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations; Checks work in progress and when finished, checks for compliance with supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines; The incumbent is responsible for preparing estimates and ordering of material for regular maintenance work and its related construction projects, laying out new work or repair work, and is required to work from blueprints and/or sketches; In addition to the standard leader duties, the position is responsible for assisting the Maintenance Supervisor (Maintenance Mechanic Forman WS-4749) in the plans, layout, assigning, and coordination of work for the team on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. Input is provided to the supervisor on scheduled project work or longer-term plans. Assists the supervisor in establishing priorities and deadlines based on general work schedules, methods, policies, and code requirements. Coordinates projects and other work activities based on the instructions received from the supervisor; The incumbent will passes on to other workers the instructions received from supervisors and gets work started, e.g., by assigning the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the group led; Works along with other workers and sets the pace; Demonstrates proper work methods; Sees to it that needed plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are available, and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations; Obtains needed information or decisions from supervisors on problems that come up during the work; Maintains a current knowledge, and answering questions of other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives; The incumbent will perform a variety of duties including preventive maintenance, repair of buildings, structures and components, building equipment, fixtures, and utility components; The incumbent will report to supervisors on status and progress of work and causes of work delays; and answering questions of supervisors on overall work operations and problems (for example, concerning, additional on-the-job training requirements for individual employees); The incumbent must possess a wide variety of skills and knowledge associated with carpentry, plumbing, metal fabrication, mobile equipment operation, soldering, brazing, welding, and oxy/acetylene cutting; The incumbent will work with both new and existing items. Work includes demolition, removal, installation, modification, and alteration; The incumbent will assist the Maintenance Supervisor in preparation of estimates and the ordering of materials for its assigned construction project, maintenance request, repair and/or improvements to any systems and structures throughout the Medical Center and CBOCs; Assist the supervisor in the effective and economical use of allocated resources, both human and material. Update the shop Supervisor or higher supervisors regarding status and progress of work and causes of work delays; The incumbent will utilize automated computer software for day to day operations, such as but not limited to Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, VISTA, VATAS, AMESIMERs, Maximo or other work order systems etc.; The incumbent will convey to other workers the instructions received project assignment from the supervisor and get work underway by assigning the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the maintenance team; work along with other workers and set the work pace; and ensure that needed plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are available; Performs other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Mechanic Leader/PD04006O Physical Requirements: Must independently lift large bulky and hard to grasp objects weighing up to 50 pounds or heavier objects with the assistance of other workers. May work in tight or cramped places in uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time. Works while standing, sitting, or kneeling, requiring reaching, lifting, and bending while using hand tools and power tools. Uses ladders to climb up and down. The position will require moderate physical exertion, including frequent lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, climbing, bending, stooping, crawling, and negotiating confined spaces, as well as occasional heavy lifting and strenuous exertion. Employee will be required to work on high ladders and scaffolds as occasionally necessary. The employee is standing or walking most of the time and must be in very good overall physical condition.
