This position is located within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Police Service (PS). To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 11/24/2025. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-11 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-09. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Providing physical security and assistance to groups and individuals entering facility or campus; ensuring compliance with security procedures designed to safeguard personnel and property; applying knowledge of security and protection regulations, policies, procedures, and practices; utilizing various security equipment and devices; making/sharing recommendations to improve security processes. Performs law enforcement assignment such as, responding to reports of crimes and/or calls for police assistance; securing crime scenes and/or accident sites; takes appropriate actions in emergency situations; conducts investigations; keep abreast of law enforcement rules, regulations and techniques. Applicants must possess excellent communication skills. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. Firearm Requirement: VA Police Officers are required to carry agency-approved firearms while on duty on VA property. Applicants must be able to possess firearms under the terms of the Gun Control Act of 1968, as amended (18 U.S.C. 922(g)(9). Physical Security Specialist CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT 1. New VA Physical Security Specialist are required to attend an 8-10 week course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. Satisfactory completion of this course is a condition of continued employment. 2. A medical examination is required. The duties of these positions require moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature. The following medical requirements apply to all applicants: good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice. 3. Physical Security Specialist The Physical Security Specialist is a uniformed role responsible for ensuring a safe and secure environment across various VHA settings, including Medical Centers, Clinics, and domiciliaries throughout the United States. Serving as a crucial member of the VA Police Services, the specialist often acts as the first point of contact for Veterans and visitors, providing security and assistance to a wide range of individuals. Duties consist of the following, but are not limited to: Evaluate risks and develop security procedures to safeguard personnel, property, and operations from unauthorized access and threats. Implement and monitor security measures, including safeguards, cameras, and alarms. Provide input on security engineering and electronic security systems during VHA project design and construction phases. Collaborate with GS-09 Physical Security Specialists to ensure compliance with federal and VA security protocols. Collect information and prepare reports on facility compliance with VA regulations and Physical Access Control Systems (PACs). Respond to violent incidents, conduct investigations, question witnesses, and arrest individuals violating laws. Enforce various laws and regulations to protect visitors, employees, and government property while maintaining a peaceful environment. Maintain data confidentiality and ensure secure handling of hard copy and electronic data. DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
