This vacancy is for a Executive Protection Agent in the Office of the Secretary within the Department of Commerce. This is an open and continuous announcement. Eligible and qualified applicants who apply through the first cut-off date, November 24, 2025, will be on the initial certificate referred to the hiring manager. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This experience need not have been in the federal government. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies; knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. To qualify at the GS-12 level, applicants must meet mandatory training AND specialized experience. MANDATORY COMPLETION OF BASIC TRAINING: Applicants who have satisfactorily completed a basic law enforcement training program provided by the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, or an equivalent training program that provided instruction in the laws of arrest, search, and seizure as they relate to investigating offenses against the United States, must provide a copy of your certification with your application. NOTE: Selectee may be required to successfully complete division-specific basic agent training. -AND- SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 (or equivalent pay band) level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as: Developing protective services strategies to safeguard (i.e., executive-level, high-ranking, etc.) personnel, facilities, and infrastructure. AND Monitoring and conducting investigations of security operations (i.e., security incidents, threats, suspicious activity). AND Collaborating with federal law enforcement agencies and emergency preparedness partners. AND Executing investigative and operational activities (i.e., surveillance, threat assessment, etc.) and preparing reports. LISTED BELOW IS ADDITIONAL INFORMATION THAT IS REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION: MAXIMUM ENTRY AGE LIMIT: The maximum entry age for this position shall not exceed age 37, unless you have sufficient prior Federal civilian law enforcement experience or you are a preference eligible veteran. If you are a preference-eligible veteran, you may be eligible for this position after your 37th birthday. You must supply a copy of your Defense Department Form 214 (DD-214) along with Standard Form 15 (if applicable) and any associated documentation in accordance with the instructions in this vacancy announcement. Failure to provide proof of Federal LEO coverage may result in removal from consideration. NOTE: LAUTENBERG AMENDMENT - This position authorizes the incumbent to carry a firearm. Any person who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor crime of domestic violence cannot lawfully possess a firearm or ammunition (Title 18, USC Section 992(g)). A felony or misdemeanor crime of domestic violence is generally defined under the statute as any offense involving the use or attempted use of physical force, or the threatened use of a deadly weapon, committed by the victim's current or former domestic partner, parent, or guardian. The term convicted, as defined in the statute, excludes any person whose conviction has been expunged, set aside, or pardoned, or any person whose civil rights have been restored, so long as such restoration does not restrict the shipping, transport, possession, or receipt of firearms or ammunition. Candidates who have been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor crime of domestic violence within the meaning of the referenced statutes are not eligible for this position. FIREARMS REQUIREMENT: This position requires that the incumbent meet initial and continuing qualifications in the use of firearms as outlined in the Gun Control Act of 1968, amended by the Lautenberg Amendment of 1996. An applicant whose background includes any of the following will be ineligible for consideration: 1) convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment exceeding one year; 2) has any outstanding warrants or is a fugitive from justice; 3) unlawful user of or addicted to any controlled substance; 4) adjudicated as a mental defective or has been committed to a mental institution; 5) illegally or unlawfully in the United States; 6) renounced U. S. citizenship; 7) subject to a court-ordered restraining order from harassing, stalking, or threatening an intimate partner or child; or 8) convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence. MEDICAL REQUIREMENT: The duties of this position require moderate to arduous physical exertion involving walking and standing, the use of firearms, and exposure to inclement weather. Manual dexterity with comparatively free motion of fingers, wrist, elbow, shoulder, hip, and knee joints is required. Arms, hands, legs, and feet must be sufficiently intact and functioning in order that applicants may perform the duties satisfactorily. Sufficiently good vision in each eye, with or without correction, is required to perform duties satisfactorily. Near vision, corrective lenses permitted, must be sufficient to read printed material the size of typewritten characters. Hearing loss, as measured by an audiometer, must not exceed 35 decibels at 1000, 2000, and 3000 Hz levels. Since the duties of these positions are exacting and responsible, and involve activities under trying conditions, applicants must possess emotional and mental stability. Any physical condition that would cause the applicant to be a hazard too himself/herself, or others is disqualifying.
As a Executive Protection Agent, you will perform the following duties: Develop and implement comprehensive protective service strategies to safeguard Department of Commerce (DOC) personnel, facilities, and critical infrastructure from potential threats and vulnerabilities. Enforce DOC security policies, conduct inspections, and ensure compliance with applicable regulations, particularly those governing the protection of high-ranking officials and sensitive operations. Monitor ongoing security operations, conduct investigations into security incidents, threats, or suspicious activities involving DOC personnel, assets, or programs, and prepare detailed analytical reports with recommended corrective actions. Provide guidance to senior officials on physical security risks, operational protective measures, and policy development. Execute investigative and operational activities. Conducts physical surveillance and threat assessments, and utilize intelligence-driven methodologies to neutralize risks before or during events. Coordinate interagency protective efforts by working with internal bureaus, federal law enforcement agencies, and intelligence and emergency response partners. Collaborates with federal, state, and local law enforcement partners to develop actionable intelligence and facilitate joint apprehension operations when required.
