Job Description:

Valley Forge National Historical Park is located in southeastern Pennsylvania providing open space, cultural and natural resource values in an urbanized area. The park is visited by over 2 million visitors a year who come to learn the area's history, experience various special events and participate in multiple recreational opportunities. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is Apr-Sept but can be variable during these months due to project needs. Anticipated Entry on Duty: 3/22/2025
To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT) Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprints reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation Repair, etc. Knowledge of materials Technical Practices (theoretical precise, artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT): Must possess the ability to perform the most difficult and complex laboring tasks, including: Operates heavy power equipment such as lawn mowers, chain saws, brush cutters, brush chippers, portable snow blowers, and all types of hand and light power tools (such as shovels, pulaskis, picks, digging bars, rakes, lawn edging equipment, electric drills, etc.), to maintain buildings, grounds, roads, trails, etc. Loads and unloads supplies and materials from trucks, trailers, dollies, etc. Digs ditches and trenches with pick and shovel where soil is hard and compact and must grade or slope; Moves heavily loaded wheelbarrows and hand trucks; uses heavy type power mowers including adjusting blades, cleaning and oiling. Cuts trees and heavy vegetation with axe, chainsaw, or powered brush cutters; stacks heavy logs, lumber, and sacks of cement, etc., Performs janitorial duties for buildings and grounds when required. This is an open continuous announcement, in which applications are collected over several months, and have multiple cut-off dates. Applications will be considered throughout the open period of the announcement. **INITIAL CUT OFF IS Monday 29 December 2025 ** Referral certificates will be issued when a hiring official exhausts current certificate and/or additional vacancies need to be filled. Duties: Operates various power tools such as chain saws, weed eaters, leaf blowers, chippers, lawn mowers, vacuums, generators, compressors, jackhammers, pavement saws, pumps and sprayers, along with various hand tools. Pick up supplies and materials using trucks, forlifts, and hand trucks. Perform basic preventative maintenance on structures with minimal supervision. Perform all tasks safely. Physical Demands: The incumbent may lift, carry, set up and handle tools, parts, equipment and materials that weigh up to or over 50 pounds unassisted. May work from ladders, platforms, scaffolds and perform work or repairs in hard to reach places and positions. Requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling and climbing in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Required to operate standard hand and power tools. Working Conditions: Work is performed both inside and outside. Incumbent is subject to climatic extremes in all weather conditions. Work conditions may be dusty, greasy and noisy. There is exposure to fumes and the possibility of electric shock, bruises, burns, scrapes and cuts. The work requires frequent special care to avoid injuries. To reduce the dangers, the incumbent is required to follow prescribed safety practices such as wearing specified trades and craft protection clothing (i.e., hard-hats, gloves, safety shoes and glasses, ear plugs, respirators and rain gear).
