This position is located within Environmental Management Services (EMS) of a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. The position, is responsible for supporting and performing tasks (e.g., environment of care, textile distribution and training) associated with the Environmental Management Services (EMS) goals and objectives. Tours of duty may vary depending on the internal department needs with weekdays, weekends, day and evening shift schedules.

Lead duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: The Housekeeping Aid Leader engages with all employees to provide purpose, direction and motivation, while training the employee in proper procedures and techniques to meet or exceed desired outcomes of workload and safety. This position reports progress of employees to the Supervisor and makes recommendations as necessary. Ensures all tasks are complete and deadlines are met. The employee may clean areas to include, but not limited to: outpatient surgery/clinics, central sterile, clean rooms, patient areas, laboratory, pharmacy, offices, corridors, stairwells, toilet rooms, shower rooms, and all other Medical center areas as required. The position may be required to take the lead in textile distribution and inventory management, uniform management and Patient Assistance Program; provides on-the-job training to all employees assigned. May be required to move furniture and set up conference rooms for meetings, trainings or other events. Performs other duties as assigned. Jobs vary in such ways as the nature, degree, frequency, and duration of muscular effort or physical strain experienced in work performance. The work at the grade 1 level involves light physical effort, such as that involved in using vacuum cleaners and running lightweight powered scrubbers; continually standing, bending, stooping, and reaching; frequently lifting and emptying wastebaskets; frequently pushing carts loaded with dirty laundry or waste paper; and occasionally lifting and carrying items weighing up to about 20 pounds. At the grade 2, the highest level in the standard, moderately heavy effort is used occasionally in moving, setting up, and working from ladders. Use of heavy powered equipment is required but not on a continuous basis. As at level 2, this position demands continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. The work requires the occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment such as wall washers, industrial type buffers weighing over 50 pounds. Working Conditions: This factor covers the hazards, physical hardships, and working conditions to which workers are exposed in performing work. At level 1, custodial workers work indoors, in areas which normally have adequate heat, light and ventilation. They are exposed to dirt and disagreeable odors. Normally, there is a chance of minor injuries only such as cuts and bruises. At the grade 2 level, the highest level in the standard, the employee usually works indoors in areas that normally have adequate heat, light, and ventilation. Occasionally the employee is exposed to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in stripping floors, etc., and to serious injuries (e.g., broken bones) from falls from ladders or scaffolds. Like grade 2, work is primarily performed indoors in a medical center environment in areas which normally have adequate heat, light and ventilation. PPE may be required in some circumstance as exposure to possible contagious diseases, blood and bloody secretion are inherent to this position. Care is required to avoid serious injuries (i.e. broken bones) when working on ladders, or when using 30-100-pound power equipment or handling hazardous materials.
