This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, US Coast Guard, Industrial Department, Mechanical Group, Pipe Shop in Baltimore, MD.
Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired. Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements: 1) Likelihood of success in assignments which require interest, motivation and readiness to do simple work (SCREENOUT) 2) Ability to handle weights and loads 3) Ability to follow oral directions 4) Dexterity and safety National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You will serve as a trainee and will assist journeymen with a variety of pipefitting tasks involved in the construction, repair, maintenance, overhaul and conversion of a wide variety of types and sizes of marine craft and vessels and in connection with miscellaneous manufacturing projects performed at the Yard. Being a civilian working for the Coast Guard makes you a valuable member of the team. Typical duties include: * Acquiring knowledge, skills and abilities required for the trade. * Being exposed to work processes * Developing and coordinating contacts beneficial to the successful performance of assignments. Mandatory training is required which must be successfully completed and other training may occur as necessary for success in the position.
