You will serve as a BOILER PLANT OPERATOR in the Public Works Department of NAV FACILITIES ENGINEERING COMMAND SE.
Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1) Knowledge and understanding of boiler systems and auxiliary equipment 2) Demonstrates experience in assessing and troubleshooting boiler system. 3) Ability to communicate boiler system requirements and repairs needed.4) Knowledge of water treatment procedures and water analysis. 5) Able to work in confined areas around boilers and support equipment. Moderate to strenuous effort with long periods of walking, standing, climbing, bending, and crouching. You will perform operational maintenance on boiler plant equipment to maintain optimum function.
You will make regular inspections (e.g., checking gauges, rate of fuel consumption, rate of steam) to ascertain boiler operating performance.
You will direct junior employees in fueling, firing, steaming, and cleaning boilers.
You will observe control systems to take precautionary measures (e.g., close valves, start auxiliary pumps, change or shut down boilers, secure precipitators) to prevent damage to equipment or injury to personnel.
You will identify treatment and chemicals to control chemical concentrations, remove impurities, entrapped gasses, or to stabilize fluctuating boiler water conditions.
