Job Description:
The Library of Congress Internships (LOCI) program is a seasonal, 10- or 12- week paid internship program that enables undergraduate, graduate students, and recent graduates to gain experience through applied learning and professional development opportunities that advance the academic and career pursuits of participants.
Must be a U.S. citizen. Permanent residents are ineligible for consideration. MUST be a U.S. Citizen currently enrolled at time of application in a degree-granting program of study at an accredited institution of higher learning (community college, college, university, or tribal college) at the undergraduate level or graduate level, AND/OR have graduated or will graduate between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2025. MUST BE AVAILABLE TO REPORT TO WORK ONSITE FOR FULL TEN-WEEK PERIOD from June 1 through August 7, 2026. MUST be available to attend mandatory orientation on Monday, June 1, 2026. NO EXCEPTIONS. Must be available to work a full-time schedule, Monday – Friday (dependent upon project assignment) during the Library’s core business hours: 6:30 am – 6:00 pm Eastern Standard Time. MUST be able to commute to the Library of Congress main campus in Washington, DC to conduct work duties for the duration of the internship. Appointment/retention is subject to a favorable evaluation of a personnel security/suitability investigation. Note: If selected, you must assist us to expedite processing of your application by responding quickly (within one week) to the Personnel Security Department. It is your responsibility to meet the concrete deadlines set forth under this announcement. It is also your responsibility to ensure that you respond and complete the necessary components of the background investigation within the given timeframe. The position description number for this position is 404866. This is a non-supervisory, bargaining unit position. The 2026 Summer session of the Library of Congress Internships Program includes options for in-person, onsite project work. Interns hired under this announcement will be expected to commute to a Library of Congress facility in Washington, DC to conduct work. This program offers undergraduate, graduate students and recent graduates insight into the environment and culture of the world's largest and most comprehensive repository of human knowledge. Interns will be exposed to a broad spectrum of library work: copyright, preservation, reference, access standards, and information management. Near the end of their appointments at the Library, the interns join together to present their accomplishments and share their insights on the impact of their work. The assignments will span many professional fields at the Library, including information technology, human capital, event planning, communications, collections support and research. Interns work with Library staff on mission-critical projects that utilize the interns’ existing skills. Interns are exposed to additional opportunities to expand their skills through special assignments, professional development training and workshops, mentoring, and other enrichment activities. Interns participate in a wide range of projects offered across the Library of Congress that are designed to challenge and strengthen the skills of emerging professionals and fulfill the mission and vision of the Library of Congress. 2026 Summer Projects: The onsite project names for summer 2026 are listed below.
