Required Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 1* year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience. United States citizenship is required. Preferred Qualifications: We have a strong preference for candidates with experience as a federal appellate law clerk. Serious consideration will also be given to the recommendation of a judge familiar with the applicant's work. Candidates with experience presenting appellate oral arguments and experience representing parties in trials or evidentiary hearings are likely to be a particularly good match for the position. Other candidates will not be excluded from consideration if they don't have all of these preferred qualifications. The United States Attorney's Office for the Western District of North Carolina is accepting applications for an Assistant United States Attorney in the Appellate Division. If selected, the attorney will be responsible for a high volume of criminal appeals before the Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and post-conviction matters before the United States District Court for the Western District of North Carolina. Although the attorney should be prepared to work efficiently and independently, they will routinely collaborate with others in the division, editing briefs and helping others prepare for oral arguments, among other things. The attorney will also work closely with colleagues in our Criminal and Civil Divisions, providing training, consulting about legal issues, and providing regular updates on developments in the law. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
