About the position: This position is Non-appropriated Fund (NAF) and will be assigned to the 97th FSS Outdoor Recreation/Pool. The primary purpose of this position is to observe swimming area to ensure safety of patrons. Pay and Grade will be set based on experience. This is a Summer position, not to exceed 7 September 2026.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if the position allows for qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Qualifying Experience: For pool and aquatic center lifeguards: Must possess a valid, nationally recognized lifeguard certification covering lifesaving, water rescue methods, skills, procedures. Possess a valid, nationally recognized basic first aid certification. Must possess a valid nationally recognized CPR certification which includes adult, child and infant procedures. Pre-employment screening required for swim ability, rescue skills, and CPR. Must have experience with cash handling to effectively account for large amounts of cash with little or no errors. Satisfactory completion of installation records checks, state and national criminal background checks may be required for positions that provide lifesaving duties for children. Must be able to satisfactorily complete a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI). All certifications must remain valid during the period of employment. Must be able to communicate orally and verbally and possess effective customer service skills. Must be available to work non-regular shifts to include evenings and weekends. Must meet specific physical requirements, pass a physical examination, and have required immunizations. Must be able to lift and carry 45 pounds. Successful completion and favorable adjudication of applicable background investigation (Tier 1 Level) is required. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:
Continuously observes swimming area to ensure safety of patrons. Ensures the swimming area is open to patrons at scheduled times and only authorized people are admitted to the area. Rescues swimmers in trouble, promptly administers first aid, and calls for medical assistance if and when needed. Warns swimmers of unsafe environmental or health conditions, ocean conditions of rough water or hazards, and recommend closing swimming areas until safe conditions prevail. When working at pools, water pumps may operate and control chemical additives to ensure pool water meets specified standards. Ensure that diving boards are inspected frequently for cracks or loose matting, and that necessary repairs are made. May perform other related or incidental duties as assigned for the daily operation of the swimming area to include cleaning of bath houses, wading pools, main pools, pool decks, beach areas, sunbathing areas, etc. Performs other related duties as assigned. Arrive at work area with sufficient time to be ready for duty at assigned time. Report for work each day according to assigned duty schedule with no unexcused absences. Continuously and effectively monitor entire swimming pool area to detect any problems/unsafe situations within 30 seconds of occurrence. Take immediate and appropriate action when an unsafe condition in the event of accident, injury, near drowning or drowning. Consistently maintain entire pool area in a clean, sanitary, and safe condition and in accordance with written standards and oral instructions. Ensure 100% safety for all customers. Attend all in-service training without unexcused absences.
